Shatavari which is scientifically known as Asparagus racemosus is widely grown in India, Nepal and other Himalayan areas. The plant is an Indian version of asparagus. Owing to its therapeutic effects, Shatavari is usually used in various ayurvedic treatments. The high nutritional qualities of the roots of the plant have been made use of in the rejuvenating therapies for women. Apart from being a general health tonic, the plant is also used as a uterine tonic. It nourishes the ovum and other reproductive organs in female body and thus enhances fertility. Hence Ayurvedic doctors prescribe drugs including Shatavari during infertility treatments for women.

It is also a galactagogue which enhances the production of breast milk. Shatavari is also found to be effective in creating a balance in the hormonal system of women.``Ayurvedic treatments for disorders related to female reproductive organs are very much associated with the curing capabilities of the plant, Shatavari. It is mainly used in treatments for regulating ovulation, infertility, menopausal problems, and miscarriages in women,’’ says Ambika, an Ayurvedic student in Kerala.

The plant also has a soothing effect and it can be used as a stress-buster which in turn will promote physical and mental health.
